Terms & conditions
These are the rules for entering and winning. Please read them before you claim squares.
1. The Promoter
The promoter is Innovation Systems Ltd (company number 16893892), whose registered office is at 18 Mount Pleasant Terrace, Bentham, North Yorkshire, LA2 7LB (the "Promoter").
Our correspondence address is 18 Mount Pleasant Terrace, Bentham, North Yorkshire, LA2 7LB.
If you wish to contact us for any reason, please email hello@nationaltreasurehunt.co.uk.
2. The competition
2.1 These terms and conditions apply to all National Treasure Hunt competitions listed at nationaltreasurehunt.co.uk (the "Website"). Each individual competition is referred to as a "Hunt".
2.2 Each Hunt covers a defined geographical area divided into selectable one-square-metre grid squares ("Squares"). An entry consists of a validly allocated Square in that Hunt. Claiming a Square gives the Entrant an entry associated with that geographical Square. It gives no ownership of, interest in, or right of access to the physical land represented by the Square.
2.3 An entry fee is payable for paid entries. No Competition Question is required. A free entry route is therefore available for every Hunt in accordance with clause 3.11. Paid and valid free entries participate on the same basis when determining winners and are eligible for the same prizes.
3. How to enter
3.1 Each Hunt will run from and including the opening date and time to the closing date and time specified on the Website (the "Opening Date" and "Closing Date"). All times and dates referred to are the times and dates in London, England.
3.2 If it is absolutely necessary to do so, the Promoter reserves the right to change an Opening Date or Closing Date. If a date is changed, the new details will be displayed prominently on the Website. The Promoter will not extend a Closing Date simply to sell more entries.
3.3 All entries must be received before the specified time on the Closing Date. A Hunt may close earlier if the maximum number of available entries has been allocated. Entries received after a Hunt has closed will not be accepted.
3.4 If there is a maximum number of entries to a Hunt, this will be stated on the Website. The number of entries an Entrant can make may be limited if the maximum number of entries is reached.
3.5 Entrants may enter more than once, subject to any maximum number of entries stated on the Hunt page and the availability of Squares. Each postal free-entry request must be sent separately. Multiple requests sent together in one envelope will be treated as a single postal request.
3.6 To make a paid entry, go to the relevant Hunt page, select one or more available Squares or use the random-selection option, provide the information requested and pay the entry fee shown on the Website. Each Square may be allocated to only one Entrant. Once allocated, it is no longer available to another Entrant in that Hunt.
3.7 Entries and the information required to administer them must be submitted in English.
3.8 For paid entries, the Promoter will provide confirmation that the entry has been received. Payments are processed by a third-party payment provider and the Promoter does not hold card details.
3.9 The Promoter will not accept responsibility for entries that are not successfully completed, are lost or are delayed because of equipment failure, technical malfunction, network, server, computer hardware or software failure, postal delay or another cause outside the Promoter's reasonable control.
3.10 By purchasing entries or submitting a free entry, you are entering into a contract with the Promoter and agree to be bound by these terms and conditions.
3.11 You may enter a Hunt for free by complying with the following conditions:
3.11(a) send a postal request by First Class post to: National Treasure Hunt, 18 Mount Pleasant Terrace, Bentham, North Yorkshire, LA2 7LB;
3.11(b) hand-delivered requests will not be accepted;
3.11(c) include your full name, date of birth, full postal address including postcode, the name of the Hunt you wish to enter and, if you choose, your email address so that we can tell you where your free Square or Squares were allocated;
3.11(d) incomplete or illegible requests may be rejected;
3.11(e) you may make multiple free-entry requests up to any entry limit applying to the Hunt, but each postal request must be sent separately. Multiple requests in one envelope will be treated as one postal request. A valid postal request will be allocated the number of free entries applicable to that Hunt's free-entry method. The number may be more than one so that the free route remains a genuine alternative where the paid entry price is lower than the cost of postage;
3.11(f) free Squares are allocated at random from the Squares available when the request is processed. A free entrant cannot require allocation to a particular Square;
3.11(g) by entering, you confirm that you are eligible to enter and accept these terms and conditions;
3.11(h) the postal request must be received before the Hunt closes. Proof of posting does not guarantee entry;
3.11(i) if the maximum number of entries is reached before the postal request is received and processed, no entry can be allocated; and
3.11(j) valid free entries have the same chance of winning and are eligible for the same main and secondary prizes as paid entries. Because no entry fee is paid for a free entry, it does not increase a cash prize that is calculated by reference to paid entry fees.
4. Choosing a winner
4.1 Main Prize. Before a Hunt opens, the Website system automatically and randomly allocates a fixed secret geographical point within the Hunt area (the "Treasure Location"). The Treasure Location is not hand-picked by the Promoter. It is securely recorded before the Hunt opens and does not change during the Hunt.
4.2 The Treasure Location remains secret until the Hunt has closed. After closing, the Promoter reveals the Treasure Location and determines which valid allocated Square is geographically closest to it.
4.3 The Entrant holding the valid Square closest to the Treasure Location wins the Main Prize. If an Entrant holds the Square containing the Treasure Location, that Square is the closest possible Square and wins.
4.4 If two or more valid Squares are exactly equidistant from the Treasure Location, the Square allocated first in time wins.
4.5 The Promoter retains a verifiable record of the Treasure Location as fixed before the Hunt opens so that it can demonstrate after closing that the location was not moved in response to entries.
4.6 The result will be determined as soon as reasonably possible and in any event within 7 days after the Hunt closes (the "Result Date").
4.7 Loose Pigeons. Some Hunts contain secondary prizes known as "Loose Pigeons". The Hunt page states the number and value, or method of calculating the value, of those prizes.
4.8 Each Loose Pigeon has a fixed secret geographical location (the "Pigeon Location") within a defined geographical search zone (the "Pigeon Zone"). The Pigeon Location and Pigeon Zone are fixed and recorded before the Pigeon becomes active and are not moved in response to entries.
4.9 After an Entrant obtains a Square, the Website may tell that Entrant whether their own Square falls within a Pigeon Zone. Before the Hunt closes, the Promoter does not disclose the Pigeon Location, the Entrant's distance from it, the precise boundary of the Pigeon Zone or information about another Entrant's Squares.
4.10 When the Hunt closes, each Pigeon Location is revealed. The Pigeon Prize is won by the Entrant holding the valid Square within that Pigeon Zone that is closest to the Pigeon Location. If two or more eligible Squares are exactly equidistant, the Square allocated first in time wins. Winning or being eligible for a Pigeon Prize does not affect eligibility for the Main Prize.
4.11 Instant rewards. Some Hunts may contain Squares that award additional free Squares immediately when claimed. The relevant Squares are fixed before the Hunt opens. These rewards are free Squares in the same Hunt, have no cash value and do not alter the method used to determine the Main Prize or a Pigeon Prize.
5. Eligibility
5.1 Hunts are open only to residents of the United Kingdom aged 18 years or over, except:
5.1(a) employees of the Promoter;
5.1(b) employees of agents or suppliers of the Promoter who are professionally connected with a Hunt or its administration; and
5.1(c) members of the immediate families or households of those people.
5.2 By entering, you confirm that you are eligible to enter and claim any prize you may win. The Promoter may require reasonable proof of age, identity, residence or other eligibility.
5.3 The Promoter will not accept entries that are automatically generated by computer, incomplete or otherwise invalid.
5.4 The Promoter may disqualify an Entrant whose conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the Hunt or who materially breaches these terms or the Website rules.
5.5 Subject to clause 11.3 and your statutory rights, entry fees are not refundable merely because you do not win, later decide not to participate, are found to be ineligible, or are validly disqualified.
5.6 Fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, fraudulent concealment, hacking, interference with the proper functioning of the Website, payment reversal or unauthorised use or alteration of Website code may result in entries being declared void and the Entrant being prevented from participating in future Hunts.
5.7 Public map. Squares may appear on a public map in a colour selected by the Entrant. Entrants must not use the placement or colouring of Squares to create unlawful, obscene, abusive, harassing, discriminatory, threatening or defamatory words, symbols or images, or content targeting an individual or group. Where reasonably possible, the Promoter may hide or remove the public-facing display while preserving the underlying competition entry. Serious, deliberate, repeated or unlawful misuse may result in disqualification under this clause.
6. The prize
6.1 The prizes for each Hunt are described on the Website. Each Hunt advertises a maximum cash Main Prize as an "up to" figure. This is the maximum amount payable as the Main Prize for that Hunt.
6.2 The Hunt page states the guaranteed minimum Main Prize, the percentage of valid paid entry fees allocated to the Main Prize and the advertised maximum. The guaranteed minimum, percentage and advertised maximum are fixed before the Hunt opens and do not change during the Hunt. The current prize pot is displayed on the Hunt page.
6.3 At closing, the Main Prize is the greater of the guaranteed minimum shown on the Hunt page and the stated percentage of the total value of valid paid entry fees received for the Hunt, subject always to the advertised maximum. Refunded or reversed payments, chargebacks and payments relating to void entries are excluded. Payment-processing fees are not deducted before the percentage is calculated.
6.4 Free entries have the same chance of winning as paid entries but do not increase a cash prize because no entry fee is paid for them.
6.5 There is no minimum number of paid entries required for a Hunt to proceed. If the percentage calculation in clause 6.3 is below the guaranteed minimum shown on the Hunt page, the guaranteed minimum is payable. The Main Prize will not be reduced below that guaranteed minimum because fewer entries than expected are sold.
6.6 Where a Pigeon Prize is advertised as an "up to" amount or is calculated by reference to valid paid entry fees, the Hunt page will state the applicable percentage or calculation before entry. That calculation and advertised maximum are fixed before the Hunt opens.
6.7 Cash prizes are not transferable. Any non-cash prize will be described on the relevant Hunt page and is subject to any specific conditions stated there.
7. Winners
7.1 The Promoter's application of the winner-selection method in clause 4 is final, subject to any manifest error.
7.2 The Promoter will contact each winner personally as soon as practicable after the Result Date using the contact details provided with the entry. If a winner cannot be contacted, is unavailable or has not claimed the prize within 14 days of notification, the Promoter reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible Square according to the same closest-Square method.
7.3 The Promoter will publish or make available information indicating that a valid award took place. For a major prize, this may include the winner's surname and county and the winning Square or result.
7.4 If you object to any or all of your surname, county or winning entry being published or made available, contact hello@nationaltreasurehunt.co.uk. The Promoter may still provide relevant information to the Advertising Standards Authority on request.
8. Claiming the prize
8.1 A winner must claim the prize personally. A prize may not be claimed by a third party on the winner's behalf.
8.2 If your contact details change, notify the Promoter as soon as reasonably possible at hello@nationaltreasurehunt.co.uk, identifying the Hunt and your old and new details.
8.3 A cash prize will be transferred directly to the winner's nominated bank account. The winner may be required to provide evidence that they are the sole or joint beneficiary of that account and reasonable evidence of identity and eligibility. Failure to provide required evidence within 14 days of request may result in the prize being offered to the next eligible Square according to the same closest-Square method.
8.4 The Promoter does not accept responsibility for a winner being unable or unwilling to take up a prize, except where the law provides otherwise.
9. Limitation of liability
Insofar as permitted by law, the Promoter, its agents or distributors will not be responsible or liable to compensate a winner or accept liability for loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up a prize except where caused by the negligence of the Promoter, its agents or distributors or their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.
10. Data protection and publicity
10.1 Personal information provided in connection with a Hunt may be held and used by the Promoter, its agents and suppliers to administer the Hunt and as otherwise set out in the Privacy & Cookies Policy.
10.2 The Promoter may announce a winner using the limited information described in clause 7.3. Participation in additional promotional activity is voluntary and is not a condition of entry or winning.
10.3 If you do not wish to participate in publicity, you may tell the Promoter. This will not affect your chance of winning. The Promoter may still provide information to the Advertising Standards Authority where required to demonstrate that the Hunt was properly administered and the prize awarded.
10.4 A winner may be required to provide further personal information and proof of identity, eligibility and bank-account ownership where reasonably necessary to verify and pay the prize.
10.5 You may exercise your data-protection rights by emailing hello@nationaltreasurehunt.co.uk. Some information must be retained where necessary to administer a live Hunt, determine or verify a winner, comply with law, resolve disputes or maintain financial records.
11. General
11.1 The Promoter may amend these terms and conditions from time to time. The latest version will be available on the Website. The rules applying to an open Hunt, including its fixed Treasure Location, winner-selection method, advertised maximum prize and basis of calculating the prize, will not be changed merely to improve sales or because fewer entries than expected are sold.
11.2 If there is reason to believe that these terms have been breached, the Promoter may exclude the relevant Entrant from the Hunt and, where proportionate, future Hunts.
11.3 The Promoter reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel or amend a Hunt where it becomes necessary to do so. There is no minimum number of entries and the Promoter will not hold void, suspend, cancel, amend or extend a Hunt due to a lack of entries. If the Promoter voids or cancels a Hunt, affected paid Entrants will be offered a full refund of the entry fees paid for that Hunt.
11.4 Hunts on the Website are in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with Facebook or Meta. By entering, Entrants agree that Facebook and Meta have no liability for the administration or promotion of the Hunts.
11.5 These terms and conditions are governed by English law and the parties submit to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, subject to any mandatory rights a consumer has to bring proceedings in another UK court.
11.6 You should save or print a copy of these terms and conditions for your records.
